5 Steps to Protecting Your Windows Home Computer

5 Steps to Protecting Your Windows Home Computer

Most people are aware that there are ongoing security issues with the Microsoft Windows operating system and other applications. However, many people do not understand how easy it is to improve your computer security and reduce the chances of being a victim of complex threats found online.

These steps should take less than a few hours to complete and should not clean your wallet.

1) Windows Update

An important first step you need to take is to make sure all your Microsoft applications have all the latest updates installed. These updates or "patches" refer to security risks and other issues. Microsoft usually issues these updates every month. Visit a Microsoft website or open an automatic update from the Windows control panel. Even if your “new” computer is second only this is still an important first step. If you are buying a used computer with Windows XP make sure Service Pack 2 or SP2 is installed.

 2) Strong Passwords

People often ignore this but good thinking about using passwords is an important aspect of your computer security. A strong password should consist of at least 8 characters and a combination of text, symbols, and numbers. At the very least you need to make sure that high-risk apps have a strong login password. These services include your bank, credit card, other financial services such as PayPal, your email address, and any other services such as eBay that criminals can use to make a profit.

3) Anti Virus Protection

While it is true to say that the threat of computer viruses has decreased over the past few years they can still cause serious damage to your computer. Part of the reason why the threat has decreased is that PC manufacturers now often integrate anti-virus packages with their new computers. For example, last year my new Dell laptop was sent with a 90-day trial of McAfee's Internet Security Suite. The best bet here is to buy a security package that includes a firewall and antivirus software at least. Top brands include McAfee and Symantec Norton products. However, Microsoft has recently entered the market with their “OneCare” offer at a much lower price.

4) Firewall

If you are using a broadband connection then a firewall is a direct need to control the flow of traffic between your computer and the internet. A firewall monitors incoming internet traffic through your computer ports. Better products also monitor outbound traffic from your computer to the Internet. As above the best bet here is to buy a firewall application as part of a security package offered by many retailers as usual. Once the hardware firewall is installed as part of your router package you do not need anything else. A company called Zone Labs offers a great free firewall product called Zone Alarm that should be used at least. Windows XP now sends us a free security system but the product does not recognize the outgoing connection so I believe it does not provide adequate protection.

5) Spyware Protection Tool

This software is the last episode in your basic internet security settings. This tool helps fight spyware and adware. There is a wonderful combination of free and paid versions offered. Excellent free software includes Microsoft Windows Defender, Spybot S&D, or Ewido Anti-Malware. Ewido Anti-Malware is often recommended on computer help platforms. Be careful if you decide to buy a solution. There are a lot of corrupt sellers out there who press products that give you a small amount. Stick to trustworthy names like Webroot's Spy Sweeper or PC Tool's Spyware Doctor. These products always come out well in independent testing.
